After crossing the Nullabor in our 1965 Volkswagen 1200 we camped at Esperance in 1967 and watched the ice blocks for our Esky being delivered on a horse drawn dray with sacks protecting the blocks from the Sun - fantastic memories.
I have been to WA as my Mum was born there and has relatives there, but the most enduring memory was catching the train across the Nullabour Plane towards WA with my Mum when I was 18 and stopping off at Kalgoorlie and witnessing the uniqueness of this town which included seeing the “ladies” outside their “shacks” and some Aborigines living out of their cars. After watching Kalgoorlie Cops on TV here in NZ, it brings back those memories and to go back and revisit it would be awesome.
My husband and I spent November to January 2011-12 revisiting Western Australia. We had not been there since 1998..
This time we did a trip from Kalgoorlie to Esperance up to Heyden to see Wave Rock down to Albany around to Margaret River via the Treetop walk, then up to Perth to spend Christmas and New Year there with our daughters and families.
The absolute highlight had to be our visit to Wave Rock in Hyden . A detour between Esperance and Albany I must admit but well worth it.
THe accommodation at the Rock was great and walking up to the rock at sunrise was awe inspiring.I Would love to send you a couple of the photos I took for you to see.
Extraordinary part of Australia . I think Western Australia is the jewel in the crown.
I went from perth down to esperance and did the tree top walk and went to the super pit at kalgoolie and back to perth and went and watched the western force play the crusaders and then went to the pub drinking with the western force players great night!!
Evening time, sitting on the wharf at Esperence, eating great fish and chips and watching mum and dad and a ute full of kids from four hundred km up the road pile out , grab their fishing lines and head for the wharf.
Instructions were shouted to mum and dad for chips and direction given to my wife and self as to where the best place to fish would be.
And did we want a line.
Another magic moment in Western Australia is the beautiful scenery around Esperence. The clear blue green water and white sands plus the granite boulders. I stayed at the backpackers on the beach in Esperence. The purple salt pools was another highlight.
It has been 30 odd years sense i was in WA on a farm work scheme . so didn’t have much of a look around taking a trip to Kalgoorlie was about it.So would be wonderful to holiday in western Australia and take in all coast to outback to the Margaret river all the sights WA has to offer it would be extraordinary experience and be neat to win.
